b. 39

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A short accent in A and EE

A long accent in GE

No accent in  FE

..

The accent in A is much shorter than the first sign in this bar. In GE both signs are almost identical - both have the form of short hairpins  and look like long accents. In FE the second sign was omitted, and EE has an ordinary accent instead. The consistency of the version of EE with the notation of A should be treated as a happy coincidence, as that edition definitely had no access to the manuscript.

b. 39

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

cresc. in A

..

The sources differ in the placement of the indication cresc.; in subsequent editions that indication moves farther and farther apart from the place where it was originally written by Chopin.

b. 39-40

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

No accents in  A (→GE)

Accents in FE

..

When correcting FE (→EE), Chopin added accents under bass notes in the middle of each of those bars. In EE, a vertical accent was used in bar 40, which is characteristic for that edition.

A wedge in A

A dot in GE (→FEEE)

..

The staccato wedge of A was read as a dot in GE (→FEEE).

b. 40

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A dot in A (→GE)

Absence of any sign in FE (→EE)

..

A dot over the last quaver, entered in A (→GE), is barely visible in FE and looks like a trace of removal of a dot once printed there. The sign is absent altogether from EE . It seems improbable that the version with a dot just over the first of the two quavers could correspond to Chopin's intentions  – cf. similar motifs in bars 17, 37 and 41.
