composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

The accent in A is much shorter than the first sign in this bar. In GE both signs are almost identical - both have the form of short hairpins and look like long accents. In FE the second sign was omitted, and EE has an ordinary accent instead. The consistency of the version of EE with the notation of A should be treated as a happy coincidence, as that edition definitely had no access to the manuscript. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Errors in FE |

When correcting FE (→EE), Chopin added accents under bass notes in the middle of each of those bars. In EE, a vertical accent was used in bar 40, which is characteristic for that edition. category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: EE revisions , Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic post-publication changes and variants |

A dot over the last quaver, entered in A (→GE), is barely visible in FE and looks like a trace of removal of a dot once printed there. The sign is absent altogether from EE . It seems improbable that the version with a dot just over the first of the two quavers could correspond to Chopin's intentions – cf. similar motifs in bars 17, 37 and 41. category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE |
