b. 1

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

The title and dedication according to GE (→FE)

The title and dedication of A after inclusion of the probable contents of the lost title page for the entire opus

Elements added in EE

..

There are certain differences between the sources in the wording of the title given to the entire opus and to that particular Nocturne. EE is the most arbitrary in that respect, containing a sentimental and definitely inauthentic title "Les Plaintives".

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A correct metronome marking in A (→GEFE)

A missing dot in EE

..

The metronome marking in FE is printed inaccurately: the '=' sign is missing and the dot extending the value of the crotchet is only visible in some copies. This is perhaps the reason why the dot is missing in the metronome marking of EE.

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A staccato dot in A

No dot in GE (→FEEE)

The editors' variant proposal

..

The absence of the dot is probably due to oversight on the part of the engraver of GE. Still, as we cannot rule out the possibility that the correction was made by Chopin, we give the dot in parentheses as optional.

The version of A (→GEFEEE)

The version of FEFr corrected by the editors

..

Franchomme described the variant of the Nocturne opening recorded in FEFr as „the change made by the author”. We correct the obviously erroneous a flat on the last semiquaver of each group to f.

b. 2-3

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A more probable interpretation of the slur in A

A less probable interpretation of A (→GEFEEE)

..

The slur in A ends in a manner that allows for two interpretations. In GE (→FEEE), that slur was considered to end on the last note of bar 2. In our opinion, it should extend to a flat1 at the beginning of bar 3.
