b. 238-242

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

No slurs in GC (→GE) & FE

Slurs in EE

Our alternative suggestion

..

Three phrase marks were probably added by Chopin in the base text to EE. We give them in the main text as an alternative, suggesting considering the possibility of an inaccurate interpretation of the signs by the engraver.

b. 239-241

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

Staccato dot in GC (→GE) & FE

No marks in EE

Two dots suggested by the editors

..

The absence of the staccato dot over the 2nd crotchet in bar 239 in EE may be linked to the addition of slurs, however, according to us, the authenticity of the dot's omission is not certain – the engraver of EE could have overlooked it or considered it to be superfluous with relation to the added slur. Due to the fact that the added slurs are of a phrasing character in this texture (and not articulation), in the main text we suggest dots in both analogous bars 239 and 241.

b. 239-242

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

The pedalling of these bars in FE and GE1 includes mistakes and inaccuracies:

  • in FE there is no  sign in bar 241 (a patent mistake);
  • in GE1 there are no  signs in bars 239-240 and the entire pedalling in bars 241-242 (and subsequent ones).

We give the unambiguous indications of GC and EE and GE2.

b. 240

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

Similarly as in bar 52, the bottom note of the 1st chord in FE1 (→FE2) is an erroneous a1. The patent mistake was corrected in FE3 (→FE4), EE and GE, which in the case of FE and EE could have been performed by Chopin.

b. 242

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

No sharps in GC (→GE) & FE1 (→FE2EE1)

Sharps in FE3 (→FE4) & EE2

..

Same as in bar 54, we include in the main text the sharps raising the f1-f2 grace note to f1-f2, added – most probably by Chopin – in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4). The change was introduced also in EE2.
