b. 7-9

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

Two slurs in GC (→GE)

No slurs in FE

Slur in FE based on bars 195-196

Our alternative suggestion

Slur in EE, literal reading

Slur in EE, possible interpretation

..

Determining Chopin's intention concerning the slurring of bar 8 (together with adjacent chords) encounters difficulties. The composer's idea can be represented both in the source versions and in our suggestions, considering a possible oversight of the engraver of FE. It is the versions of GC (the main text) and two versions based on the reconstructed on the basis of the reprise slur of FE that we consider to be most reliable, as far as the sources are concerned, and pianistically natural.

b. 21-25

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

Articulation marks in bar 21 in GC (→GE)

No marks in FE

Articulation marks in 3 bars in EE

..

The articulation signs – dots and accents – in bar 21 could have been added in GC (→GE) by Chopin. They are probably to be considered to be valid also in the subsequent similar bars, namely 23 and 25-27. The idea was partially implemented in EE, in which the same indications were added in bars 21, 23 and 25, which can be ascribed to Chopin's intervention in the base text to this edition. See also bars 210-213.

b. 40

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

Octave in GC (→GE) & FE

Chord with b2 in EE

..

The version of EE can be authentic; it should have been then considered to be a Chopin improvement. A possibility of Chopin intervention in this place is, however, reduced by the fact of leaving the mistakes in the part of the L.H. without correction – no naturals raising g(1) to g(1) and d1 instead of e1 in the last chord. Therefore, we are probably dealing with a revision or mistake.

b. 45-49

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

No indication in GC (→GE) & FE

in EE

..

In the main text we include the cresc. - - indication, added most probably by Chopin in the base text to EE. Similarly in bars 233-237.

b. 46-49

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

Long accents &  in GC (→GE)

Long accents in bars 46-47 in FE

5 short accents in EE1

6 short accents in EE2

Long accents in bars 47 & 49 suggested by the editors

..

The differentiated source versions of the signs of a dynamic character – accents and  – is a result of overlapping of possible mistakes (e.g., no signs in FE in bars 48-49), inaccuracies (short accents in EE) and revision (repetition of the signs from the top stave on the bottom in EE1, addition of an accent in bar 48 in EE2), as well as Chopin corrections. The composer may have added signs in bars 48-49 in GC and he almost certainly completed the notation of EE, by adding in a copy of FE2, being the base text to this edition, an accent in bar 49 (together with cresc. - -). In the main text we suggest indications modelled after the similarly completed version of EE1 in bars 234-237, in which the indications added by Chopin do not interfere neither with the previous ones of FE, nor with the ones added by the reviser.
