Issues : Errors in GE

b. 1

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

In GE, there is a  sign between the first octaves in the L.H. It is a result of misinterpretation of the 1 numeral, with which the bar was provided in GC – see the note on abbreviated notation. The sign was repeated in EE2, by moving it in front of the 1st octave of the bar.

Accent in GC & GE2

..

The missing accent on the 3rd crotchet in GE1 is most probably an oversight of the engraver; the accent was added in GE2.

One pedal in GC

Two pedals in FE (→EE)

Our variant suggestion

..

In some of the sources – GC and GE – the pedalling of these bars is written clearly inaccurately, as holding the pedal beginning on the 2nd beat of bar 13 longer than one crotchet leads to an unjustified mix of harmonies, as far as the sound is concerned. The difference between the sources based directly on [A] – GC and FE – is most easily explained with an oversight of the copyist, although other explanations are also possible. On the other hand, the unnecessarily complex pedalling of FE (→EE) in a faster tempo, without an audible error, may also not entirely reflect Chopin's intention – cf. similar bars 32-34. Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution, leaving a possible use of pedal on the 2nd beat of bar 13 at the discretion of the perfomer.

b. 34

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

In the main text we give two accents written in GC, since the top one (short) could have been added there by Chopin, despite the presence of the bottom one (long).

No sharps in GC (→GE) & FE1 (→FE2EE1)

Sharps in FE3 (→FE4) & EE2

..

In the main text, we include the added in the proofreading of FE3 (→FE4) – most probably by Chopin – sharps raising the f1-f2 grace note to f1-f2. According to us, it was probably a correction of a mistake. Similarly in the recapitulation – bar 242
