GC - Gutmann's Copy

Date: X 1839-IV 1840
Title: Sonate || Marche funebre
Dedication: None

A copy of [A] intended for the base text for the first German edition, prepared by one of Chopin's favourite pupils, Adolf Gutmann. GC was reviewed and corrected by Chopin who probably corrected minor inaccuracies of notation in a few places, e.g., in bar 16 and he also introduced a few changes to the text of Marche, e.g.:

  • he removed the grace note in bar 4;
  • he corrected the last crotchet in the L.H. in bar 14;
  • he changed the division between the hands of the last chord of the Sonata, by moving d to the R.H.

Identifying Chopin as the one who performed a correction is often difficult or impossible – in the entire Sonata many corrections out of these visible in GC are rather a result of the copyist's checking his own work.

In a few places GC conveys the original versions, changed later in the proofreadings of FE or the base text to EE, e.g., no c2 grace note in bar 37 and analog.

In spite of Chopin's proofreading, GC is not free from mistakes and inaccuracies, generally repeated after [A]:

  • no  in bars 18 and 40;
  • erroneous pitch of the trilled minim in bar 20.
