EE1 - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: X 1837
Title: Douze Etudes || No. 18
Dedication: Made. la Comtesse d'Agoult

EE1 is based on a lost copy of [A] or – which is more likely – its copy. After having been written, the manuscript was reviewed and corrected by Chopin, so even the versions differing EE1 from the remaining manuscripts may be authentic, e.g., fingering in the middle of bar 43 and above all, a slightly different version of the final chord. In turn, nothing indicates a possibility of Chopin proofreading of EE1.

On the other hand, EE1 lacks certain elements of notation, present in FE and FC (→GE), which may indicate oversights of the engraver or the copyist preparing the basis, or omission of this base text at the time of introducing changes and additions by Chopin, e.g.:

  •  in bar 5;
  •  lowering a3 to a3 and pedalling in bar 47, as well as a cautionary  before D in bar 48.

EE1 probably includes an erroneous note at the beginning of bar 49 (a possible Chopin's mistake in [A]). Same as in some other sources, numerous accidentals are missing, as, e.g., in bar 4 and analog., 12, 29-30, 31, 34, 47-48.

A few minor additions are most probably an addition of the reviser: accidentals (in spite of lacks, EE1 is more accurate than FC and FE in this regard). In two places one can assume a deletion of the correct  due to a mistake in the previous note – see bars 33 and 59.
