GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: X 1837
Title: Douze Etudes || 6me Etude
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult

GE1 is based on FC and it generally carefully reproduces the text of the basis. The differences can be generally explained with an inaccuracy, or manner of the engraver, e.g.:

  •  instead of  in bar 1,
  • omitted slurs in the L.H. in bars 12 and 27-28,
  • moved  sign in bars 25 and 47,
  • g1 instead of a1 in bar 27.

In turn, editorial revisions certainly include:

  • addition of a  lowering g to in bar 26, probably being certain of Chopin's mistake;
  • addition of necessary accidentals, e.g.,  in bar 29 or  in bar 42 and 48;
  • replacement of semiquaver with a quaver at the end of bar 30;
  • correction of F into G in the final chord of the Etude.

The version of the L.H. in bar 12 is somehow in between these two categories; in this bar the engraver of GE1 was forced to complete the incomplete text of FC. Also at the beginning of bar 42 the culprit of the mistake of GE1 is the inaccurate notation of FC.

Revision of accidentals in this Etude was quite sketchy, numerous inaccuracies adopted from FC were still left (see the characteristics of this copy). In addition, serious pitch errors of FC in bars 5 and 49 remained without correction.
