composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

Small notes in the R.H. in A

Regular font in GE (→FEEE)

..

Chopin emphasized the accompaniment nature of the R.H. part in A by writing it out in small notes. However, the difference in note size went unnoticed in GE (→FEEE), which may have later prompted Chopin to draw engravers' attention to that kind of detail by means of a special note in the autograph (cf. Etude in A flat major Op. 25 no. 1 and Prelude in F sharp minor Op. 28 no. 8).

under the R.H. in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The change of piano to  in EE had practically no impact on the sense of that indication; meanwhile, moving it in between the staves in GE2 (→GE3) may suggest that it applies to the L.H. as well, which is definitely not what Chopin intended.

Slur end in A, literal reading

Contextual interpretation of A (→GEFEEE

..

The exact moment when the slur beginning in bar 70 ends is not clearly marked in A: if one were to be guided solely by the graphic image, one should rather end the slur on the 1st crotchet of bar 72. However, leaving the 2nd crotchet unslurred is musically unconvincing, so the solution adopted in GE (→FEEE) seems correct.

b. 70

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

..

In A there are traces of changing performance markings in the L.H. part. Initially both crotchets had staccato dots, which Chopin later removed lengthening the slur and adding an accent.

Slurs in A

GE1 (→FEEE)

GE2 (→GE3)

..

In GE1 (→FEEE), the slur in bar 72 reaches up to a flat1 on the 3rd beat of the bar, which is not in line with A. The inaccuracy was corrected in GE2 (→GE3), and another slur was added connecting a flat1 to the minim in bar 73, probably by analogy to the authentic slurring in bars 76-77.
