b. 83-84

composition: Op. 24 No. 2, Mazurka in C major

Slur end in A (→GEFEEE)

A less probable reading of A

..

The moment when the slur ends is not quite clear in A. For the reasons discussed in the note to bars 79-80 we consider it much more probable that Chopin intended the slur to reach B on the 2nd beat of the bar. This is also the interpretation given by GE (→FEEE).

The slur in A

Slurs in GE (→FEEE)

..

Both the slur end in bar 84 (the last one in the line) and the slur beginning in bar 85 are notated in A in the manner that indicates uninterrupted slurring. Yet in GE (→FEEE) those slurs were reproduced as separate ones, which - considering consistent two-bar slurs in bars  75-82 and 87-88 - may be deemed acceptable.

A possible reading of the slurs of A (→GEFE), slurs in EE3

The slur of EE1 (→EE2)

..

In A (→GEFE), the slur at the end of bar 84 does not match the slur in bar 85 that opens a new system. The slur in bar 85 is drawn as a new one, not a continuation. This inaccurate notation may be interpreted in two ways:

  • the way Chopin notated the slurs in bars 76-77; that version can be found in EE3
  • the way in which the slur in bars 80-81 are notated; that version appears in our main text as the simplest one.

In EE1 (→EE2) the slurring discrepancy was resolved by omitting the slur at the end of bar 84.

The musical term in A

The position of the term altered in GE (→FEEE)

..

The beginning of poco ritenuto in A falls more or less above the 3rd crotchet of bar 86. In GE (→FEEE) that indication was placed earlier, at the beginning of the bar, which certainly does not agree with Chopin's intention.

A single bar line in  A

A double bar line in GE (→FEEE)

..

A has a single bar line here. Chopin sometimes used double bar lines but did not add them automatically to indicate changes of key, where their significance is mostly conventional.
