b. 228

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Pedalling in A & GE2

Pedalling in GE1 (→FE)

Pedalling in EE

..

The placement of the  signs is not entirely clear in A, which could have caused later inaccuracies in the editions. We assume that they concern the 3rd semiquaver in each half of the bar, which is not contrary to the notation and it is also justified as far as the sound is concerned. Among the first editions, only GE2 has such a pedalling. The version of GE1 (→FE) is inaccurate, whereas the one of EE – arbitrarily changed.

b. 228

composition: Op. 19, Bolero

..

The difference in the sound of the last chord in bars 116 and 228 could have been unintended. It is indicated by lack of other harmonic differences between the exposition and reprise. Chopin could have, e.g. changed bar 116, forgetting about analogous bar 228; he was prone to such inaccuracies while performing proofreading. Therefore, we suggest here an alternative version, analogous to bar 116.

New slur from bar 229 in A

Continuous slur in GE

New slur from bar 232 in FE (→EE)

..

According to us, a new slur starts in bar 229 in A, although the previous one ends very close to its beginning. However, the combined slurs in GE (→FEEE) are not a result of an inaccurate interpretation of A, but of proofreading, probably a Chopin one. Nevertheless, the visible traces of corrections suggest that the composer corrected other, erroneous slurs, and not the version of A. Due to this reason, in the main text we give a musically unquestionable division of the slur written in A.
The division of the slur between bars 231 and 232, as it is in FE (→EE), is certainly an inaccuracy, related to the transition into a new line.

Wedges in FE (→EE)

No marks in GE

..

The missing staccato wedges in GE most probably result from distraction of the engraver of GE1 – he overlooked also three slurs in this bar as well as a note in bar 230.
