FE1 covers the version for one piano and orchestral parts. The present commentary, as well as the notes concerning the text, apply only to the version for one piano, encompassing the solo piano part and the piano reduction of the orchestral fragments (tutti). To mark the instrumental parts constituting the orchestral part printed in FE1, we sometimes use – wherever such a reference is necessary to determine the text of the version for one piano – the symbol FEork.
The piano part of FE1 is based on GE1 and was proofread by Chopin. The proofreading most probably consisted of two stages. The first stage were the corrections entered into the copy of GE1 serving as the basis, e.g.:
The second stage was the actual proofreading of FE1, with visible traces of performing changes in print, e.g.:
- addition of the ending of the trill in bar 11,
- removal of mezza voce in bar 19,
- addition of a cautionary to F in bar 269.
In FE1 mistakes were committed too, e.g. the mark in bar 39 was overlooked.
