Af – a fragment of an autograph of a non-final edition of the version for 1 piano, probably the first attempt to prepare a fair copy of the entire Variations, which could serve as a basis for the publisher. It consists of one card with 17 bars of the ending of the 3rd variation (bars 191-207) on one side and the beginning of the 5th variation (bars 255-267) on the other. The difference in the degree of refinement of both sides of Af is noteworthy – in variation III the notation is entirely careful, although in the solo part there are no performance markings, while in variation V there are many markings, but some of them are written with visible haste, unfinished or deleted (this especially applies to the 3rd and 4th lines).

Principles behind the main text of
the Variations in B flat major, Op. 2
We take A as our basis, taking into account changes in FE most likely originating from Chopin. We correct uncorrected, probable errors in A according to AsI and Af. The Chopin fingering noted in AsI, which can be considered a complement to the fingering inscribed in A, is given in round brackets.
