b. 20-24

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

Ending of the middle part in AI

Longer ending in A (→GE)

Tied c2 in FE (→EE)

..

Compared with AI Chopin made the ending of the middle phrase of the Mazurka in A (→GEFEEE) longer by two bars. The composer wavered as regards tying or repeating the first c2. In the main text we take account of a tie to this note added by Chopin while correcting the FE (→EE).

Cf. the comment to the L.H. and the pedalling.

b. 20-24

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

 The fifth in AI

The chord in A (GEFEEE)

..

In A (→GEFEEE), while prolonging the ending of that part Chopin emphasized its harmonic virtue by marking the sustention of the full C-major chord with notes as well as with pedal. Cf. notes related to the R.H. and pedalling.

b. 20-21

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

Erasures and other traces visible in A demonstrate that initially Chopin noted the minim e1 sustained in bars 20-23 on the upper staff.  The laborious graphic alteration must have been undertaken to convey some vital information: that note, struck with the right hand at the beginning of bar 20, is then much more convenient to play when taken over and sustained with the left hand.

b. 22-24

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

Ending of the middle part in AI

A (→GEFEEE)

..

In AI, the middle part of the Mazurka ends in bar 22 with two crotchets c2.  The quavers b flat1a flat1 introduce the repeat of the beginning. In A (→GEFEEE) Chopin changed his musical idea, lengthening that fragment by two more bars. See bars 20-24.

Two slurs in AI, literal reading

AI, contextual interpretation

Slur in A (→GEFEEE)

..

A (→GEFEEE) has a slur in the R.H. drawn from b flat1 in bar 24 to f1 in bar 29. It can be seen that Chopin added the closing part of the mark in order to bring it clearly to f1
in bar 29. In AI bars 25-28 are marked as a repetition of the corresponding fragment of beginning of the Mazurka and contain two two-bar slurs.
