in FE (→EE)

..

In A, the asterisk  is written at the end of the bar, after the 3rd beat. In AI it is written earlier, under the 2nd beat. GE (→FEEEcharacteristically has the  placed under the 3rd beat. Taking into consideration that the 3rd crotchet of the bar introduces a new phrase, the accompaniment for which is placed in the higher register, releasing the pedal slightly earlier than indicated by the notation of A seems convenient, e.g. as marked by Chopin in the analogous bar 36. For that reason we choose the latter version for our main text (cf. also pedalling of the 1st volta of that bar, not showing any differences in the sources).

b. 13-17

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

..

In bars 13-17 in AI the chords are written in the treble clef on the lower staff. In our edited text of AI the graphical arrangement of chords follows the other sources.

L.H. rhythm and slur in AI

A, slurs interpreted

Without slur in bar 12 in GE1

Inaccurate slur in bar 15 in FE (→EE)

Arbitrary supplements in GE2

Our suggestion

..

In A (→GEFEEE) Chopin modified the articulation of the L.H. part in relation to AI by separating shorter motifs by means of slurs, quavers and rests. Inaccurate notation of slurs appears both in A (in bars 15, 17 & 19-20) and in the editions—in GE1 (→FEEE) in bar 13, and in FE (→EE) also in bar 15. Moreover, GE2 introduced arbitrary supplements to the slurring in bars 12-14, 15-16 & 17-18. We propose the slurs of A, interpreted and supplemented according to the divisions indicated by the rhythmic values.

b. 13

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

No indication in AI or the main text

in A (→GEFEEE)

..

Initially, all the L.H. chords in bars 13-19 were notated as crotchets and either embraced with a single slur in AI or marked with legato in bar 13 in A. Later Chopin separated in A (→GEFEEE) shorter motifs with slurs and rests. In this context the indication legato, not fully in keeping with the new articulation concept, was left supposedly by mistake. Therefore we omit that term from our main text.
