b. 37

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

Chords in AI

Sevenths in A (→GEFEEE)

..

Chords in AI simply echo the chords in bar 35 which as a segment of the final close in A major calls for a clearly audible leading note g. In bar 37, however, the harmonic relations are different, and a lighter accompaniment in A (→GEFEEE) seems to be an improvement in comparison to the AI version.

b. 39-41

composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

L.H. in AI

A (→GEFEEE)

..

In AI, the L.H. accompaniment ends two bars earlier. In this version, harmonic changes and a dance rhythm break off almost simultaneously. The gradual fading out of particular musical elements—the harmony, rhythm and melody—introduced in A (→GEFEEE) must be considered a refinement.
