EE1 - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Co
Date: XI 1837
Plate number: W & Co. No. 2168.
Title: Scherzo
Dedication: Mademoiselle Adèle de Furstentein

The first English edition is based on a proof copy of FE1 that did not include the last corrections: examples of such situations are listed in the characterization of FE1. The edition does not bear traces of Chopin's intervention; in turn, it was significantly revised, starting from the title 'La Méditation' added by the publisher. Chopin would strongly oppose Wessel's practice of giving such titles to his works, see the Nocturne in C Minor, Op. 27 No. 1, b. 1.

Examples of changes introduced into EE1 on the basis of comparison of analogous places:

  • the beginning of the 1st slur was moved to over the quaver, thus making it look like all further slurs over this motif,
  • slurs under the L.H. part in b. 9-11 and analog., 178-181, 572-573, 574-575 i 578-579 were added,
  • ties in b. 6-7, 267-268, 310-311, 318-319 and 324-325 were added,
  • the length of the  hairpins in b. 6-7 and analog. was unified,
  • a  mark was added in b. 179-180, 527 and the one in b. 263-264 was moved,
  • a rest was added in the top voice in b. 310,
  • the wedge in b. 344 was changed to a staccato dot,
  • the rhythm in b. 394 was changed,
  • slurs were added in b. 533-534540-541, 574-575.

In EE1 the accents, which could have been of different length in FE, were generally reproduced as short ones, e.g. in b. 18-20, 118, 486. Sometimes, e.g. in b. 250, 252 and 254, the horizontal accents (short and long) were replaced with vertical ones, which was a characteristic, quite frequent discretion of Wessel's publications.

Moreover, arbitrary changes unrelated to the authentic notation of the Scherzo were introduced, e.g.:

  • the form of the grace note in b. 73 and analog. was changed,
  • the motivic slur between two octaves in b. 154 was doubled,
  • e3 was changed to e3 in b. 478,

EE1 corrected the mistakes of FE, e.g. in b. 142, 395-396, 477 or 521, yet a few new were also committed:

In addition, cautionary accidentals were added, e.g. in b. 501.
