A revised version of GE2 was prepared probably ca. 1865: see the characterization of GE2. It seems that the majority of the changes was meant to reverse the too far-reaching interventions of the revisers of GE2 by once again comparing the text with FC:

  • the notation of the tie of a2 in b. 101-102 was reproduced correctly,
  • the staccato dots in b. 165 and 173 were removed and a dot was added over g3 in b. 411,
  •  was removed in b. 189-190,
  • separate slurs in b. 268-269 and analog. were restored,
  • the notation in small quavers in b. 395 was restored,
  • the pedalling markings in b. 18-22730-731 were moved, the pedal change under b. 225-226444-445 was restored, longer, two-bar pedals in b. 452-453 and 456-457 were restored, the pedalling in b. 540-543 was removed,
  • the shortened slurs in b. 477-478 and analog. were prolonged.

The changes would generally restore the correct text, although in some cases we believe that it is the revisions of GE2 that are more justified than reproducing the notation of FC, which was sometimes inaccurate, e.g. in b. 165 and 173, 444-445 as well as in b. 540-543 and 730-731 on the above list. There are also examples of misinterpretation of the manuscript: the tie of d2 in b. 73-74 and 205-206 was replaced with an erroneous tie of e2, denying the correct decision of the reviser of GE2 in the former and of the engraver of GE1 in the latter. In turn, slurs were added in b. 540-543, since their absence in FC (→GE1GE2) was rightly considered an oversight.

There are copies of GE3 differing in the price on the cover: those with the price expressed in marks could not have been released prior to 1872.
