The provided release date, determined on the basis of a press announcement, refers to the release of the earliest impression of EE1. The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin most probably comes from the beginning of 1841, which is proven by the content of the last page, advertising Wessel's various publications*.
EE1 is based on a proof copy of FE1 that did not contain Chopin's latest corrections – see the characterization of FE1. It was subjected to a quite careful revision, correcting a number of the Stichvorlage's defects, such as overlooked accidentals (e.g. in b. 33-35) or a layout inconsistent with the rhythmic values (e.g. in b. 43). Moreover, several dozen cautionary accidentals were added, e.g. in b. 12, 20 or 68-69 and analog.
A few analogous places were unified, e.g.:
- an accent under e3 in b. 40 was added,
- a slur was added in b. 45,
- the slur in b. 71-73 was shortened,
- a L.H. accent was added in b. 90,
- L.H. slurs were added in b. 97-100.
In addition, a number of totally arbitrary changes was introduced, e.g.:
- change of the slurring in b. 13-14,
- addition of a beam to the small quavers beaming in b. 17,
- change of the font of the accents in b. 52, 55-62 and 99-105.
EE1 is not free from mistakes, the most serious of which was committed at the end of b. 20.
