GE1a - Retouched impression of GE1

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: ca 1858
Plate number: 5709
Title: Grande polonaise brillante précédée d'un Andante spianato
Dedication: Madame la Baronne d'Est

In a few places of GE1a, one can observe corrections consisting in re-engraving minor areas of a page. It seems that they were aimed at correcting certain graphically awkward places or 'refreshing' the worn fragments of the plate; however, due to the carelessness of the engraver, the changes resulted in the following mistakes:

  • in b. 27-28 the intervention was probably aimed at moving the right-hand side of the  mark away from the top stave. However, the intervention resulted in a side effect consisting in a rhythmic mistake in b. 27, in which the flag next to g2 was overlooked;
  • at the end of the piece, the endings of b. 113 and b. 114 in the R.H. part were re-engraved (a different font was used for the note heads, the arpeggio and the fermata). It is difficult to say what the purpose of the intervention was; in turn, it is the mistake committed in connection with the intervention that is conspicuous – the quaver flags next to both last notes in b. 113 were overlooked.

Traces of such interventions are also visible in the 2nd half of b. 32, where the corrections did not result in any textual changes, and at the end of b. 96, where the retouch is proven by the change of font of the marking indicating the return of the 6/8 time signature. In b. 96 the quaver flag of a1 is imperceptible; however, it is most probably a result of wear and tear of the plate, since the note was not covered by the corrections. Therefore, a mistake could have been committed while re-engraving, due to covering too small an area.

Since the note text of GE1a differs from GE1 only in the indicated places, we discuss this edition only there, otherwise considering it to be identical with GE1.
