GE2 - Second German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: ca 1868
Plate number: 5654
Title: Second Concerto
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse Delphine Potocka née de Komar

GE2 was thoroughly revised, mainly in comparison with A (A versions have been restored in several places even in those cases when changes in GE1 were probably made by Chopin). The alterations encompassed the pitch and rhythmic text, and pre-dominantly the dynamic and articulation markings, including slurring. Furthermore, this edition revised the accidentals, corrected errors (also those taken from A, not always aptly), and altered the layout of the text on the staves and pages. Edited after Chopin’s death, GE2 does not influence the determination of the text. There are copies of GE2 with different prices on the cover.

In GE2 the text of GE1 was thoroughly revised, mainly in comparison with A (A versions have been restored in several places even in those cases when changes in GE1 were probably made by Chopin, e.g. in bars 366 and 368 or 422). The alterations encompassed the pitch and rhythmic text, and pre-dominantly the dynamic and articulation markings, including slurring.

Examples of the described revisions are presented below:

  • some of the changes of uncertain authenticity mentioned in the characterization of GE1 were reversed (e.g. in bars 5-678-79392);
  • the majority of evident defects mentioned in the characterization of GE1 was corrected – only the mistakes in bars 102-103113 and 115329 remained uncorrected.
  • range of slurs was corrected, e.g. in bar 1 and all the cases of erroneous slurs mentioned in the characterization of GE1.
  • staccato dots were added, e.g. in bars 75-76143-144506
  • fingering was restored in bar 82 and 478,
  •  in bar 324 was restored as well as further elements mentioned at the end of the characterization of GE1.

In the places where Chopin marked the articulation only in the R.H. (mostly staccato or slurs), due to the rhythmic and textural similarity of the parts of both hands, GE2 would generally add articulation markings in the L.H., e.g. staccato dots in bars 143-144, 506 or slurs in bars 35-41. If slurs in the parts of both hands were different in GE1GE2 would harmonise them, e.g. in bars 125-129.

A revision of accidentals was carried out, adding overlooked signs, e.g. in bar 109224257267311 and 315422-423433, adding cautionary signs, e.g. in bar 479 as well as removing superfluous signs, e.g. in bar 482.

Edited after Chopin’s death, GE2 does not influence the determination of the text. There are copies of GE2 with different prices on the cover.
