Dating of EE1, both of the first impression and of the one we present in mUltimate Chopin, as well as the issue of Chopin's participation in the preparation of EE1 – see the characterization of this edition in the 1st mov. of the Concerto.
EE1 encompasses the Concerto in a version for solo piano – the orchestral material was not printed by Wessel. It was based on a proof copy of FE2, yet not all changes introduced in FE2 were included therein, e.g. addition of a raising e2 to e2 in bars 19 and 343 or change of e to f in the 2nd chord in bar 492. However, it was carefully revised by the editor, who controlled the notation of accidentals and reviewed performance markings, e.g. by comparing analogous places (e.g. he added a slur in the L.H. in bar 4 or in bar 70, as well as harmonised the notation of and the accents in bars 29-32 and 369-375). As a consequence, EE1 contains much less errors than GE1 or FE.
Among the corrections and changes introduced in EE1 one can find:
- revisions (generally additions) of accidentals, including cautionary ones, e.g. in bar 106, 109, 194, 224, 267, 311 and 315, 422, 435, 473, 474-475, 481 and 482;
- corrections of the mistakes of FE in bar 5, 35, 64, 73, 92, 103, 243, 263, 327, 487 and 513;
- erroneous correction of the range of the octave sign in bars 422-423,
- removal of f1 from the chord in the L.H. at the end of bar 5,
- additions of slurs, generally in the L.H., e.g. in bars 35-40, 127-128, 145-160, 161-164, 325-334;
- changes of the range of slurs, e.g. in bar 152, 156, 182-183;
- addition of ties in bars 97-98 and analog., contrary to the course of the music,
- addition of a tie of a1 in bars 157-158,
- change of leggieremente to leggiero in bar 81 and 317,
- shortening long accents, e.g. in bars 90-116, as well as replacing Chopinesque horizontal accents with vertical ones, e.g. in bars 270 and 272;
- addition of a sign in bar 117 and 435, a staccato dot in bar 433.
The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin comes from a reprint of EE1 from 1845, in which the original, individual cover was replaced with a serial one, listing all works by Chopin published by Wessel so far. A few annotations written in pencil in the presented copy are of no source value.
