Title: Second Concerto
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse Delphine Potocka née de Komar

FE1 encompassed the Concerto in a version for solo piano and orchestral parts sold optionally. The present characterization, as well as all detailed notes, pertain, with only few exceptions, to the version for one piano, consisting of the solo piano part and the authentic piano reductions of the orchestra sections (Tutti).

FE1 was based on a proof copy of GE1, not including the last retouches. Possible examples of such situations are, e.g. the absence of the treble clef in bar 64.

Chopin certainly proofread FE1, which, however, does not mean that each accurate change of the version of GE1 must be ascribed to his intervention – minor, evident corrections of the notation of accidentals could have been the work of revision. Unequivocal and likely Chopinesque corrections encompass, e.g.:

  • addition of the a1 grace note in the R.H. at the beginning of bar 11,
  • addition of f in the part of the R.H. in bars 63-64,
  • moving the 2nd crotchet an octave lower in bar 68 and 76,
  • change of E to G[] in bar 75,
  • removal of the erroneous octave sign in bars 102-103337-340,
  • addition of flats lowering g1(2) to g1(2) in bar 124,
  • change of the chord on the 2nd beat of bar 191,
  • sustaining the F-f minim in bars 220-221,
  • addition of a cautionary  before f3 in bar 237,
  • harmonising the part of the L.H. with the orchestral accompaniment in bars 243-244,
  • addition of d2 at the beginning of bar 352,
  • simplification of the 3rd crotchet in the L.H. in bar 366 and 368,
  • correction and specification of the notation of the chords in bars 374-376,
  • addition of chords in the R.H. in bars 404-405,
  • addition of  in bar 405,
  • change of d2 to e2 in bars 415, 423 and analog.,
  • change of g2 to d2 in bar 476,
  • addition of a3 and a2 in bar 485,
  • addition of accents in bars 486-487,

The authenticity of some of the changes appearing in FE1 seems to be uncertain or dubious, e.g. extending the slur in bars 195-196, replacing  with  in bar 311 or changing b1 to g1 in bar 345.

In spite of a thorough proofreading, FE1 contains a significant number of pitch, chromatic and other mistakes, e.g.:

  • Terzverschreibung errors in bar 5252267288296327487,
  • uncorrected mistakes in FE1 mentioned in the characterization of GE1 in bar 16, 30-32, 80, 113 and 115, 329, 337, 356, 398, 404, 486 and 491,
  • erroneous quaver beam in bar 35,
  • omission of  in bar 41 and  in bar 449,
  • f2 instead of e2 in bar 73,
  • no  lowering G to G in bar 75,
  • mistake in the last chord in the L.H. in bar 77,
  • no  lowering g to g in bar 92,
  • no  raising a to a in bar 102,
  • d2 instead of c2 in bar 103,
  • erroneous quaver stem in bar 243,
  • erroneous, additional c2 in bar 282 and 401,
  • no  raising e1 to e1 in bar 313,
  • octave sign started too late in bar 423,
  • a2 instead of g2 in bar 424,
  • no c1 in the chord at the beginning of bar 491.

There are also numerous inaccuracies in reproduction of accents (e.g. in bars 264278 and 280), slurs (e.g. in bars 29-32102146), dynamic hairpins (e.g. in bar 65) or, e.g.  in bars 370-376.
