b. 171

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

New slur in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

Slur continued in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The slur embracing c3 and ain bar 171 in A begins still in bar 170, and in GE1 (→FEEE) it was interpreted as running from the last crotchet in this bar (e3). According to us, it is not right, which is indicated by the slurs beginning from the cminims in bars 173 and 175. An argument for the start of the slur from the minim could be also the slur in the L.H., of the same range, as long as it was added by Chopin.

b. 171-172

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

2 slurs in A

Slur over triplet in GE1 (→FEEE)

1 slur in GE2

..

In the main text we reproduce precisely the notation of A, since there is no visible attempt to combine the slur started over the dsemiquaver – added probably later – with the slur over the triplet. The absence of the first slur in GE1 (→FEEE) is probably an inaccuracy – the engraver could have not been certain how to reproduce this slur. GE2 repeated here the slur that is present in GE (→FE) in bars 169-170.

b. 171

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No slur in A

New slur in GE (→FE)

Slur continued in EE

..

In the main text we give the slur added – probably by Chopin – in the proofreading of GE (→FE). A Chopin proofreading seems to be likely in this case, since in the entire phrase (bars 168-176), in spite of a few inaccuracies, Chopin marked with dots and slurs the parts of both hands; moreover, one can assume his participation in adding slurs in the L.H. in GE1 also in adjacent bars (bars 169-170 and analog.).

b. 171-172

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Triplet slur in A & EE

Slur in GE1 (→FE)

Slur in GE2

2 slurs suggested by the editors

..

The absence of the first slur is most probably Chopin's oversight. The slur added in GE1 (→FE) probably comes from Chopin; however, it could have been inaccurately reproduced, and it is the slur of GE2 that is compliant with the composer's intention. The slur of EE is a result of a unifying revision of the slurs on the basis of the part of the R.H. In the main text we give two slurs modelled after the slurs in the R.H.

b. 172-173

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur in bar 173 in A & GE2

Slur in bar 172 in GE1 (→FE)

2 slurs in EE

..

The absence of the slur in bar 173 in GE1 (→FE) is certainly a mistake. However, it is probably not an oversight, but a "mirror" mistake (reverse sign): instead of placing the slur to the right of the bar line, the engraver printed it on the left-hand side, where it makes no sense in this context (cf. Waltz in C minor Op. 64 no. 2, bars 76-77). In EE the slur was added in the right place, but the one in bar 172 was also preserved. GE2 has a version compliant with A
