b. 157

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Staccato in both hands in A

R.H. staccato in GE1 (→FEEE)

No marks in GE2

..

Staccato marked in A over the last crotchet in the parts of both hands is, according to us, a remaining element of the original version, in which the notes were not tied – cf. the note on the tie in the L.H. Therefore, we omit these dots in the main text. In GE1 (→FEEE) the dot of the L.H. was omitted, which must be an oversight, since two previous dots were also overlooked. In turn, the absence of both dots in GE2 is a revision, probably based on a reasoning similar to ours.

Dot & slur in A & GE2

Slur in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The staccato dot and the slur, which specify the articulation within the last phrase of this period in A, were replaced in GE1 (→FEEE) with a slur over the group of quavers. According to us, the change cannot come from Chopin, and it is certainly one of numerous obvious inaccuracies in the reproduction of slurs by the engraver of GE1.

b. 161-164

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

No slurs in A (→GE1FEEE)

Slurs in EE

Slur in bar 162 in GE2

..

The slurs, added both in EE and – to a lesser extent – in GE2, are certainly inauthentic. The slur in bar 162 can be considered to be justified in the light of the authentic slur in identical bar 166. According to us, in this context, the difference can suggest a slightly different performance, e.g. a more pronounced crescendo, hence we preserve the differentiated notation of A in the main text.

b. 162-166

R.H. dots in A

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

Dots in bar 166 in GE2

..

No staccato dots over the first quavers in bars 162 and 166 is certainly an oversight of the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE). The mistake was partially corrected in GE2, by adding a dot in bar 162 (also in the L.H.).
