GE2 - Second German edition
Publisher: | Breitkopf & Härtel |
Date: | ca 1855 |
Title: | Douze Etudes || Étude IV |
Dedication: | Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult |
While performing a new typesetting of the Etudes, Op. 25, the Breitkopf & Härtel company introduced numerous changes into the score:
- the time signature was returned;
- wedges in the R.H. in bar 10 were added;
- the overlooked note in bar 37 was added and the erroneous one in bar 49 was corrected;
- an a note was arbitrarily added to the 1st sixth in the L.H. in bar 12;
- the erroneous in bar 15 was corrected;
- the notation of accidentals was finally organised, by completing the last missing signs, e.g., in bars 22-25 and adding several cautionary signs, e.g., in bars 20 and 22, 27, 33-35;
- range of dynamic hairpins were changed, often slightly;
- slurs were changed, e.g., in bars 30-31 or 56-57;
- a quaver flag was added next to g2 in bar 52 (correction of a seemingly erroneous, yet probably intended by Chopin unconventional rhythmic notation).
GE2 was published with two graphic variants of the cover, identical from the point of view of content. The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin features a cover in the later version, used also in #GE4. Particular Etudes were also published separately, provided with a collective cover including 12 etudes each by Chopin, Henselt and Thalberg.
