GC - Gutmann's Copy

Date: X 1836 – VI 1837
Title: 2me Etude
Dedication: Mme la Csse d'Agoult

Copy performed by Adolf Gutmann, Chopin's pupil and copyist of a number of his works. It served as base text for the first German edition of the EtudeGC was based on the lost autograph, [A], probably used then as the basis for FE or EE. The dating of the manuscript is based on the same assumptions which were presented in the characteristics of A of the Etude in A major, No. 1.

GC presents a version of the piece in which certain details of notation were developed most precisely, e.g., the pedalling in bars 19, 24 and 26 corrected by Chopin (generally, the vast majority of pedalling signs in GC is written by Chopin). The composer's hand can be recognised also in a few other situations (e.g., crescendo in bars 39-40,  in bar 43), which proves a quite careful review of this manuscript by the composer.

On the other hand, GC includes various errors and inaccuracies of different significance, among others:

  • oversights of various elements, e.g., the pair of   hairpins in bars 7-8;
  • inaccurate, often too far reaching slurs, e.g., in bar 57.
