AT - Autograph of a fragment

Date: 27 I 1836
Title: Presto agitato
Dedication: None

Album autograph, dated and signed – Paris, 27 January 1836 FFChopin. It includes the first 19 and half bars of the Etude, written with twice shorter rhythmic values in the 2/4 time signature (the indication of the time signature at the beginning of the part of the R.H. is unclear). Apart from the general issue of the used rhythmic values, AT includes a number of other details which differentiate it from the final version:

  • the initial indications – Presto agitato and legatissimo;
  • the slurring of the part of the R.H. made of 10 slurs ranging from 1 to 5 bars;
  • lack of regular slurs in the L.H. – they appear only in the 2nd half of bar 18;
  • only one pedalling indication (bars 18-19);
  • a few broader positions in the part of the L.H. – in bars 8 and 11-12, yet only
  • one different note in the part of the R.H. – the 1st half of bar 19 is the same as the second (next), whereas in the subsequent sources it is a repetition of the previous one.

AT – as befits a gift – is written with a very neat handwriting, it includes only a few minor corrections: shortening of the slur in bars 8-9, change of g1 to e1 at the end of bar 11, deletion at the beginning of bar 15 (probably a superfluous ) and correction of the too low written 2nd semiquaver in bar 19.

The entire album of Antoni Teichmann includes over 100 autographs of different composers. The manuscript of the Etude is on page 16 of the album.

The editors of mUltimate Chopin wish to express their gratitude to the curator of the Museum, Prof. Bożena Schmid-Adamczyk, for rendering available a photocopy of this source.
