GE1b - Flawed impression of GE1
Publisher: | Breitkopf & Härtel |
Date: | 1848-1855 |
Title: | Douze Etudes || 1re Etude |
Dedication: | Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult |
Later impression of GE1, provided with one of the latest versions of the cover, which is indicated by years 1848-1855 as a possible period of its publication. The presented copy is by far the only identified as coming from this impression.
In the entire book (including the first six Etudes), in the copy one can see clear traces of wear and tear of plates in the form of a different kind of defects, most often inaccurately, incompletely copied elements. One of the symptoms of progressive wear and tear of plates are also revealed traces of corrections – the corrected elements of notation gradually fade, while the deleted text becomes more and more clear. In order to offset the effects of the plate degradation the publisher sometimes undertook a re-engraving of a fragment of page, a procedure involving a risk of committing errors. According to us, this is how the appearance of the only difference which does not openly result from the defect of print is to be explained – the mistake in bar 36 of the Etude in G minor No. 6.
In the detailed notes we consider this impression (copy?) as part of GE1a and we do not consider it when mentioning the sources.
