EE1 - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: X 1837
Title: Douze Etudes || No. 13
Dedication: Made. la Comtesse d'Agoult

EE1 is based on a lost manuscript, probably copy of A, reviewed and copied by Chopin (alternatively, it could have been another autograph or its copy). Nothing indicates a possibility of Chopin correction of EE1, yet differing versions of this edition may be authentic, as a result of author's corrections in the manuscript used as base text. An example of such a probably Chopin addition can be hairpins in bars 26-28.

On the other hand, EE1 was overlooked at the time of a few significant additions and changes introduced by Chopin in FE and GE:

  • there are no dynamic hairpins in bars 4-7 and 12;
  • it includes the original version of bar 21.

Wessel editions generally performed certain revisions. In the case of this Etude, one can consider the completed accidentals in bars 15 and 25 and the arpeggio wavy line in the R.H. added in bar 48 to be possible editorial additions.

EE1 includes a few patent errors: a1 instead of g1 in bar 5, d1 instead of e1 in bar 20, g instead of e in bar 33. A few necessary accidentals are also absent, e.g., in bars 16, 24, 25, 33.
