GE1b - Flawed impression of GE1

Later impression of GE1, provided with one of the latest versions of the cover, which indicates years 1848-1855 as a possible period of its publication. The presented copy is by far the only identified as coming from this impression.

In the entire book (including the first 6 Etudes), in the copy one can see clear traces of wear and tear of plates in the form of a different kind of defects. Most often they are inaccurately, incompletely copied elements, as, e.g., accents, fingering numerals, ending of slurs. One of the symptoms of progressive wear and tear of plates are also revealed traces of corrections – the corrected elements of notation gradually fade, while the deleted text becomes more and more clear. In order to offset the effects of the plate degradation the publisher sometimes undertook a re-engraving of a fragment of page, a procedure involving a risk of committing errors. The mistake appearing in bar 36 in this Etude is an instance of this kind of situation.
