FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: VI 1833
Title: Etudes || No. 3
Dedication: son Ami J. Liszt

First French edition, based on A. The comparison with the autograph, as well as visible traces of corrections reveal a number of more or less probable changes performed in print. Some of them were included in GE1, some not, which indicates the existence of at least two stages of proofreading of FE1 (probably even three – see the Etude in C major, No. 1). Chopin's participation in all stages of proofreading and their broad range is revealed by the preserved correspondence between Schlesinger and Kistner, and their palpable proof is constituted by FEcor (in the Etude in A minor, No. 2). Examples of changes performed at particular stages of proofreading:

  • 1. Changes included in GE1 – e.g. in bars 6, 8, 38 and 40 (fingering), 39-40, 44 (the 6th quaver), the last semiquaver in bar 53, semiquavers in the 2nd half of bar 67.
  • 2. Changes not included in GE1 – e.g., the 5th semiquaver in the L.H. in bar 33, bottom note of the chord in bar 44poco rall. added in bar 61.

Apart from the above illustrated changes and additions, being undoubtedly a result of Chopin's intervention, in FE1 this kind of differences appears with regard to AI, whose qualification as authentic corrections is unclear or even dubious. Above all, it concerns the overlooked and sometimes also changed performance indications, as e.g. the slur at the beginning of the piece, dynamic hairpins in bar 18, the  mark in bar 20,  marks in bars 43 and 45, accents or  in bars 17, 54 or 61,  and legatiss. in bar 62, as wellas, e.g., overlooked crotchet stems extending the bass notes in bars 18-20 or the tie of f1 in bars 55-56. We analyse each of this kind of places individually, in order to, on the one hand, respect the possible latest intention of Chopin and, on the other hand, not to deny the performer valuable authentic indications, which could have been omitted by accident.

FE1 is also not free – in spite of a few stages of proofreading – from clear errors, e.g., lack of  next to d1 in bar 34, the 5th semiquaver in the L.H. in bar 32, bottom notes of two chords in the R.H. in bar 69.
