b. 449-451

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

2 slurs in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

3 slurs in GE1 (→FE)

3 slurs in EE

..

The ending of the slur beginning in bar 449 is inaccurate in A, which is confirmed by, among others, the comparison with the next, identical figure (see also bars 409-419). GE1 (→FEEE) convey the literal interpretation of this slur, yet the contextual interpretation, adopted by us to the main text, was included in GE2. The division of the next slur in bar 450 is an arbitrary action of GE1 (→FE) – in spite of the transition to a new page, the notation of A is unambiguous. In EE, the extension of the first of the two slurs, created as a result of this division, mitigated the consequences of the mistake of GE1.

Accents suggested by the editors

..

We have decided to add accents in the main text after analogous bars 453-454. The situation is not obvious, since Chopin could have felt the need to accentuate these octaves in a more pronounced way only just the second time they occurred. The inaccurate notation is proved by fragmentary, rather accidental slurs in bars 449-452.

b. 449-451

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Slur from 2nd beat in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

No slur in GE3

Slur from 1st beat suggested by the editors

..

A comparison with analogous bar 453 most probably points to an inaccurate notation of the beginning of the slur in the sources. It is also the Chopinesque fingering, indicating those figures to be performed legato, that supports the idea of encompassing the first group of semiquavers with a slur.

Staccato dots in A, EE & GE2

No marks in GE1 (→FE)

The missing dots must be an oversight of GE1 (→FE), corrected in EE and GE2.

Wedge in A

Dot in GE1 (→FEEE)

2 dots in GE2

2 wedges suggested by the editors

..

Same as in the entire Concerto, the wedge of A at the beginning of bar 450 was reproduced in the editions as a dot. In turn, the absence of the staccato mark at the beginning of bar 451 must be considered an inaccuracy of A (→GE1FEEE). A sign – a dot – was added in GE2, most probably on the basis of comparison with analogous bars. Therefore, due to the same reason, we add a wedge in the main text.
