As - Autograph sketch
Date: | (1847) |
Title: | f-moll |
Dedication: | None |
Sketch of the entire piece encompassing bars 1-41 (written down) and bar 42 (signalised), accompanied by an indication that it should be implicitly continued – as in the beginning, from bar 2 to the double bar line in bar 16.
As does not contain a title, key signature, slurs, pedalling, dynamics, fingering or any performance indications except a slur from a grace note to the d2 crotchet in bar 41 and perhaps a staccato dot over this crotchet. In addition, in many places, the notation is either shorthand or incomplete – repeated L.H. chords are written down only as stems, without noteheads, repeated sections are signalised only by the melodic voice (bars 27-32), while the return of the first section of the Mazurka (from bar 42) was indicated with the help of a zigzag meaning "and so on and so forth".
Examples of differences between As and FE1:
- melodic line in bars 6-7, in bar 21,
- e2 instead of e2 on the last quaver in bar 12,
- two chords in the accompaniment in bar 13,
- harmonic progression in bars 22-23,
- repeated c1 in bars 22-23, without the tie present in FE1,
- rhythm of the main line in bars 23-24 (dotted in As),
- melodic line of the bottom R.H. voice in bar 23,
- g in the chords in bar 38 – present in As, absent in FE1 (due to an oversight or hesitation), and then added again by Chopin in the stage of proofreading FE2,
- repeated c1 in bars 48-49, without the tie present in FE.
