EE1 - First English edition
Publisher: | Wessel & Co. |
Date: | VIII 1836 |
Plate number: | (W & Co. No. 1644.) |
Title: | La Favorite. Ballade |
Dedication: | Monsieur le Baron de Stockhausen |
EE1 is based on FE1 as evidenced by the concordant texts of both sources; however, it includes some of the changes introduced by FE2:
- a was added to the top note of the f-f1 octave in bar 43,
- the Terzverschreibung in bar 63 was corrected – change of the 6th quaver from b1 to d2,
- the erroneous c4 note was changed to b3 at the beginning of bar 162,
- an accent was added in bar 165.
It suggests that Chopin could have also entered these corrections into the copy of FE1 that was sent to Wessel. These changes, particularly the first three, could, however, be ascribed to the reviser, comparing analogous places. Traces of editorial revision are visible in many places in EE, mainly in numerous additions of accidentals. Other changes were also introduced, e.g.:
- the font of accents was changed to vertical, e.g. in bars 41-43,
- the slur in bar 45 was shortened,
- L.H. slurs were added in bars 195-196 and 199-200,
- the direction of the c minim stem was changed in bar 220.
The provided publication date, determined on the basis of a press announcement, refers to the release of the earliest impression of EE1. The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin most probably comes from 1837, which is proven by the content of the 3rd page, advertising Wessel's various publications.*
