GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: IX 1836
Plate number: 5706
Title: Ballade
Dedication: Monsieur le Baron de Stockhausen

GE1 repeated (with errors) the FE1 version, introducing its own revisions, among them clearly incorrect ones, e.g. adding sharps rising f1 in bar 45 and f2 in bar 47 to fand f2. It cannot be entirely ruled out that some of the changes in GE1 were made by Chopin on the proof copy of FE1, they could be, for example:

  • Lento in bar 1,
  • d1 instead of e1 in bar 7,
  • accents in bars 18 and 42,
  • d2 instead of b1 in bar 63,
  • b3 instead of c4 in bar 162,
  • e1-f1 slur in bars 197-198.

It should be emphasised, however, that with the exception of the first item on the above list, all the others (as well as a number of other obvious corrections to the inaccuracies of FE1) could have been introduced by the reviser, who unified similar places and corrected potential errors, guided by his own, rather conservative sense of harmony.

There exist copies of GE1 that differ in details of their title page.
