GE2 - Revised impression of GE1

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: (1852-1865)
Plate number: 5706
Title: Ballade
Dedication: Monsieur le Baron de Stockhausen

The earliest among the impressions of GE1 in which changes to the musical text appear, e.g.:

  • in bar 44 the R.H. slurs were omitted;
  • in bar 179, the quadruplet designation – a digit and a slur – was wrongly moved to the 1st half of the bar;
  • in bar 180, the number 3, denoting a triplet, was added by mistake above the quavers g1-a1 (in later GE the error was "legitimised" by adding a rest before these quavers, which eliminated the rhythmic error but changed the authentic rhythm).

A more detailed analysis of the notation reveals that some fragments of the page were re-engraved in these places, probably due to the progressive wear of the plates. The described changes are therefore errors that occurred during the reconstruction of the text covered by this process.

The dating results from a comparison with neighbouring impressions of GE1 and GE2:

  • The latest known copy of GE1 is dated 1852,* according to an included page advertising other B&H publications.
  • Another known copy of GE2 is dated 1865-1866.** However, its musical text is lithographed, which means that the copy with the engraved text presented in mUltimate Chopin must be earlier.
