In GE3, developed almost 10 years after Chopin's death, the text of GE2 was subjected to a thorough revision, concerning both substantive and graphic issues – the division into pages and great staves was changed, slurs and other articulation markings were ordered, the notation of accidentals was decisively reviewed.
Many of the introduced changes are most probably accurate or at least justified corrections of mistakes and inaccuracies, e.g.:
- erroneous notes were corrected – bass notes in bars 1 and 5, f1 to g1 in bar 97, a3 to b3 in bar 230,
- slurring in bars 58, 64-67, 161-162, 178, 179-181 and 182-183, 200, 204-205, 229, 234-235, 250-252 and 256-257, 262-263, 267, 283-284, 373 and 377, 384-385 was changed and/or completed,
- a dotted rhythm was introduced in bar 61 and the rhythmic mistakes in bar 231, 469 were corrected,
- the notation of the tied notes in bar 167 was corrected and ties were added to b2 in bars 312-313, to e2 in bars 334-335, to the e2-e3 octave in bars 384-385,
- pedalling marks in bar 96, 146-147, 198, 365, 387 were added; moreover, the mark in bar 258, 369 was moved,
- the still missing accidentals were added, e.g. a lowering d1 to d1 in bar 177, c1 to c1 in bar 186, d3 to d3 in bar 239, restoring a1 in bar 266, lowering g1 to g1 in bar 267,
- a number of cautionary accidentals was added, e.g. in bar 59, 65, 221, 237-239 and superfluous markings were removed, e.g. sharps in bar 194, 217,
- the inaccurately placed mark in bar 128 and in bar 355 were moved,
- the in bars 208-209 was prolonged,
- staccato dots were changed to wedges in bars 137 and 140 and a wedge was added in bar 238, 241,
- dubious articulation markings were changed in bars 275-276,
- the abbreviated notation of the L.H. octaves in bars 297 and 299 was written out.
Moreover, some changes that are less justified, as far as the sources are concerned, or even arbitrary ones were introduced. The most significant ones concern the addition of naturals lowering c3 to c3 in bars 233 and 235 and the transfer of the last quaver in bar 385 an octave lower – 170 years after Chopin's death, both those arbitrary changes reign almost supreme on the world's concert stages. In addition, e.g.:
- performance indications were added in Tutti in bars 68-87, 100-119, 309-311,
- in the five-quaver fragment of the orchestral reduction in bars 126-127, the erroneous version of GE2a was replaced with a text free of mistakes – based on GEorch – yet differing from the authentic version of FE (→GE1→GE2),
- in bars 130-143 the long accents were reproduced as short, while the accent in bar 347 was changed to a ,
- wedges were added in bar 138 and 141-142,
- e was added on the 3rd quaver of bar 280 and 281, and f was changed to a in bar 283,
- a mark was added in bar 327, was removed in bar 411,
- fingering in bar 358 was corrected and completed.
A number of mistakes was also committed, e.g.:
- dynamic hairpins were overlooked in bars 57-58, 245 as well as 3 accents in bar 363,
- in bar 272 was overlooked,
- the L.H. slur in bar 391 was overlooked.
A few mistakes repeated after GE2 remained uncorrected, e.g. the erroneous chords in bars 338-339 or d3 instead of e3 in bar 450.
