FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: VI 1833
Plate number: M.S.1409
Title: Concerto
Dedication: Monsieur F. Kalkbrenner

FE1 included the Concerto in the version for one piano and optional orchestral parts, sold separately. Both the present characterization and all detailed notes refer to – with a very few exceptions – the version for one piano that comprises the solo piano part and authentic piano reductions of the orchestral parts (Tutti). The orchestral parts – FEorch – may be consulted under, e.g. the Chopin's First Editions Online website (cfeo).

FE1 is based on a lost autograph ([A]) and was proofread by Chopin at least twice. A more detailed justification of this filiation – see the characterizations of Atut and FE1 in the 1st mov. of the Concerto. Examples of changes performed at certain stages of proofreading may be found below:

  • 1.  Changes introduced in [FE0], included in GE1 (first stage of proofreading):
  • 2.  Changes not included in GE1 (last stage of proofreading):
    • hairpins added in bars 18-19 & 22-23 (probably);
    • a slur added in bars 124-125;
    • cautionary naturals added in bar 156 (probably);
    • the interchange of L.H. motives in bars 250-251;
    • naturals added in bar 257 (probably);
    • ties added to c1 in bars 332-333 and 334-335;
    • changes to the pitch in chords in bars 338-339;
    • five R.H. slurs added in bars 399-401;
    • the correction of a Terzverschreibung in bar 420 and 429.

In spite of several rounds of proofreading, FE1 is not free from various types of mistakes and inaccuracies. Some of them were probably repeated after the Stichvorlage ([A]), e.g.:

  • the missing  lowering d1 to d1 in bars 177 and 179,
  • the missing  raising b2 to b2 in bar 221,
  • the missing  lowering d3 to d2 in bar 239,
  • inaccurate notation of accidentals in bars 263-267358-371,
  • no naturals lowering d(1) to d(1) in bar 481.

Other inaccuracies, mistakes and oversights must or may be a result of inaccuracy of the engraver, e.g.:

There are copies differing in volume (those with a blank page at the end are probably earlier) or in the cover's details, e.g. price or the publisher's name – the piece was reprinted a few times also by Schlesinger's successor, Brandus.

FE1 serves as the base source for the edition of the Concerto.
