FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: VI 1833
Title: Concerto
Dedication: Monsieur F. Kalkbrenner

FE1 included the Concerto in the version for one piano and optional orchestral parts, sold separately. Both the present characterization and all detailed notes refer to – with a very few exceptions – the version for one piano that comprises the solo piano part and authentic piano reductions of the orchestral parts (Tutti). The orchestral parts – FEorch – may be consulted under, e.g. the Chopin's First Editions Online website (cfeo).

FE1 is based on a lost autograph ([A]) and was proofread by Chopin at least twice. A more detailed justification of this filiation – see the characterizations of Atut and FE1 in the 1st mov. of the Concerto. Examples of changes performed at certain stages of proofreading may be found below:

  • 1.  Changes introduced in [FE0], included in GE1 (first stage of proofreading):
    • removed arpeggio in bar 16,
    • simplified notation of the parts converging on the bass note in bars 72-73,
    • proofread and added slurs in bars 106-113.
  • 2.  Later changes, not included in GE1 (last stage of proofreading):
    • added fingering digits in bar 16,
    • a b1 note added to the chord in the L.H. in bar 43,
    • an added slur and wedges in bars 92-94,
    • b2 changed to g2 in bar 103,
    • added cautionary naturals in bars 106 and 108.

In spite of several rounds of proofreading, FE1 is not free from various types of mistakes and inaccuracies. Some of them were probably repeated after the base text ([A]), e.g.:

  • the missing  returning e2 in bars 39 and 41,
  • inaccurate notation of accidentals in bar 49,
  • the missing  over the mordent in bar 72,
  • no sharps raising a to a (in various octaves) in bar 7988 and 90, 91
  • 2 missing accidentals in bar 103,
  • no naturals lowering c2 to c2 in bar 113 and 122.

Other inaccuracies, mistakes and oversights must or may be a result of inaccuracy of the engraver, e.g.:

  • the misaligned L.H. part (contrary to the rhythmic values) in bar 23,
  • an erroneous accidental in bar 42,
  • a misplaced  in bar 44,
  • f instead of d in bar 73,
  • a misplaced accidental in bar 77, generating a textual doubt,
  • a misplaced c2 minim in bar 87,
  • an inaccurately placed digit determining the irregular group in bar 91, generating a rhythmic doubt,
  • vague rhythm in bar 94,
  • d instead of f in bar 108,
  • inaccurate pedalling in bar 108 and 113,
  • a2 instead of g2 in bar 112.

FE1 serves as the base source for the edition of the Concerto.
