Plate number: | M.S.1409 |
Title: | Concerto |
Dedication: | Monsieur F. Kalkbrenner |
A copy that could belong to Chopin's pupil, Caroline Hartmann, constituting a part of a collection completed probably by one of his other pupils, Joseph Schiffmacher*. Some of the annotations contained therein (variants, some corrections of mistakes and fingering) were certainly or most probably added by Chopin's hand. Therefore, one can assume that other may have also come from Chopin, at least partially. The most important ones include:
- changes and additions in the form of variants in bar 29, 49 (likely), 57, 58-61 (3 variants), 63, 91. A vast majority displays characteristics of the Chopinesque style;
- additions of some of the overlooked accidentals; generally where their absence could mislead the performer, e.g. in bar 43, 47, 91, 103;
- added accidentals of a reminding nature, most probably to avoid doubts while performing the Concerto from score, e.g. in bar 70 or 101-103;
- other corrections of printing mistakes, e.g. a faulty alignment of the L.H. part with respect to the R.H. one in bar 23, an erroneous in bar 42.
The most numerous group of annotations definitely concerns fingering. Some digits resemble the Chopinesque ones; however, the majority of them was written by one or two different persons. After all, a part of those fingerings could have been indicated by Chopin during lessons, since they are generally compliant with the Chopinesque habits. In the main text, we take into account the fingering of FEH only when there is an indication that the fingering is or at least could be authentic – resemblance to Chopin's handwriting and/or a confirmation by entries in other copies, of unquestioned authenticity – FES and FED.
