Different accents in A and FE

 in GE

Identical accents in EE

..

The marks in A are definitely accents, yet in GE they assumed the form of hairpins  . Two accents of different length in FE are closer to the original notation of A than two identical (short) ones in EE.

b. 44

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

..

In the majority of sources there is no  raising f3 to f sharp3. The sharp was added only in GE2

For writing that note Chopin used 4 ledger lines (one too many). He corrected his mistake by deleting the lowest ledger line. Interestingly, it seems that the engraver of GE did not notice the correction, as that edition has got visible traces of moving the note head down by a third.

Crotchet stems in A

GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In A, Chopin marked with extra crotchet stems the progression c sharp-d-e flat, evidently in connection with the span of the semiquaver figures and the actual possibility of sustaining the marked notes with the fingers. In GE1 (→FEEEc at the beginning was mistakenly sustained instead of at the end of bar 44. In GE2 the omitted stem for d was added.

Accents in A (→GE2)

Without any accents in GE1 (→FEEE)

The editors' variant suggestion

..

The accents of  A were probably omitted by mistake in GE1 (→FEEE). However, Chopin did not supplement them when proofing FE, despite the fact that he was adding the lines lengthening cresc., in that bar and in the preceding bars he was supplementing other L.H. accents. As we cannot be sure of his ultimate intention, we give the accents in brackets and leave the decision to the performer.
