Slurs

b. 8

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A slur in A (→GEFEEE)

A vertical dashed line changing the phrasing written in FED

..

In FED, Chopin marked the altered phrasing of a group of semiquavers in a manner that is typical of him. One often comes across vertical lines signifying change of phrasing in teaching copies, e.g. in Impromptu in G flat major Op. 51, bars 32, 37, 89 & 91.

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

The slur given in A

The slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The extent of the slur in A seems clear here, yet it was interpreted differently in GE (→FEEE).

b. 10-11

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

GE: the tie sustaining f2 from bar 9 is not completed.

FE (→EE): the slur begins earlier.

..

The slurs and ties of A, unambiguous in their meaning and extent, became somewhat distorted in the editions. In GE, due to the fact that bar 10 marked the beginning of a new line of text, the tie sustaining f2 had to be divided into two parts; although the part from bar 10 was accidentally omitted, the meaning of the curved lines printed in bars 9-10 remained unchanged and easy to guess. In FE (→EE), the earlier commenced slur seems to be a continuation of the tie from bar 9, which definitely suggests a change of meaning.

A slur in A & EE3

A shorter slur in GE

No slur in FE (→EE1)

..

In the edited text we give the most natural reading of the slur of A. The slur in GE may be considered as its less natural interpretation. The concordance of the slur added in EE3 with the slur in A is accidental, as the corrections of that edition [EE] had GE as the starting point.

In FE the last two triplets of the R.H. semiquavers were mistakenly placed over the three last notes of the left hand part. FES has signs written into the score that indicate the correct synchronisation of both hands.

b. 13

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

The triplet slur in A (→GEFEEE)

The phrasing slur added in FEJ

..

The slur added in FEJ is, in the editors' opinion, not only a teaching remark but an improvement of imperfect notation.
