b. 55-62

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

Short accents in FE & GE2 (→GE3)

Long accents in GE1

Vertical accents in EE

..

The accents in b. 55-56 and 59-62 are undoubtedly short in FE, such as in b. 52. In spite of that, GE1 gives here bigger accents, such as in the preceding cantilena section, which is probably inadvertence (the second German edition introduced short accents, like in entire Andante). The introduction of vertical accents is a frequent discretion of EE.

b. 56

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

f1 in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

a1 in GE3

..

The change of the 10th note from f1 to a1 was introduced in GE3 probably by analogy with b. 60. However, the analogy is unjustified in this place, since the difference in the accompanying figure – a in b. 56, f in b. 60 – significantly changes the arrangement of the chord being the basis of the figuration. There is a similar situation in b. 100.

The version of EE1 must be a mistake, a Terzverschreibung or resulting from mistaking bars, corrected in EE2.

No pedalling in GE

& [] suggested by the editors

The easiest explanation for the absence of a  mark in GE would be an oversight, although a revision also cannot be excluded. In turn, the missing  mark may be authentic and does not have to be considered a mistake, since there are  marks without following  marks in Chopin's pieces. Despite that, in the main text we suggest [] at the end of b. 66, mostly to warn performers from earlier pedal changes.

b. 62-63

composition: Op. 22, Andante spianato

..

In GE the sempre dim. indication was subjected to minor editorial actions: the dim. abbreviation was extended to dimin. and it was moved to b. 62, closer to sempre. Formally, the changes do not influence the meaning of the indication, since the word sempre ensures its validity to the end of this section; however, they slightly impair the visual impression of extension of the range of its validity.
