EE1 - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Co
Date: XI 1836
Plate number: W & Co. No. 1642
Title: Second Concerto
Dedication: Madame Anderson, de Londres

Dating of EE1, both of the first impression and of the one we present in mUltimate Chopin, as well as Chopin's participation in the development of EE1 – see the characterization of this edition in the 1st mov. of the Concerto.

EE1 encompasses the Concerto only in a version for piano solo – the orchestral material was not printed by Wessel. It was based on the proof copy of FE2, although not all changes introduced in FE2 were included therein, e.g. a  restoring d1 in bar 2. In turn, it was carefully revised by the editor who controlled the notation of accidentals and reviewed performance markings, e.g. comparing analogous places (e.g.  in bar 1 was added, pedalling in bar 82, slurs in the L.H. in bar 34 were unified). As a consequence, EE1 contains much less errors than GE1 or FE

Among the corrections and changes introduced to EE1 we can find:

  • revisions (generally additions) of accidentals, including cautionary, e.g. in bar 10, 22, 69;
  • corrections of mistakes of FE in bar 43 and 83 (also in the L.H.);
  • additions of slurs, generally in the L.H., e.g. in bars 3-4, 13, 35, 42, 56, 60-61, 65, 67-68;
  • changes in the range of slurs, e.g. in bar 129;
  • change in the rhythmic notation in bars 6 and 28 as well as change of rhythm in bar 80;
  • shortening long accents, e.g. in bar 40 as well as replacing Chopin accents with vertical ones, e.g. in bars 22-23 or 52;
  • addition of staccato dots in bars 7-17 and 35, accent in bar 22, a  sign in bar 26;
  • addition of the bottom octave to E in bar 82.

The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin comes from a reprint of EE1 from 1845, in which the original, individual cover was replaced with a serial one, enumerating all Chopin's pieces published by Wessel so far. Few annotations in pencil in the presented copy are of no source value.
