Lack of accidentals before the 5th pair of quavers in A (→FE→EE3) means that Chopin forgot to put either a  next to the 9th quaver (a1) or a  next to the upper note of the following sixth (a2). The former possibility seems to be much more likely:

  • such errors belong to the most common ones in case of Chopin (see the issue "Omissions to cancel alteration");
  • in the scale melodic passages of this Etude Chopin would insert chromatic tones between the tones of the current key and not instead of them;
  • in analogous bar 35 the  returning d2 was added, probably by Chopin, in the last proofreading of FE (→EE).

The revisers of GE and EE4 added a  before the upper note of the sixth.

Omission of the accent in the editions is one of these numerous situations in which it is uncertain whether we are dealing with a common error or Chopin's proofreading. According to us, the 1st possibility is more plausible.

The sole  mark written in A – the only one between bars 5 and 42 – was completed with a  mark at the end of bar 28 in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). According to us, while adding a  in this place, Chopin took into account only the part of the L.H., as a result of which he did not pay attention to the change of mode from major to minor. Therefore, in the main text we suggest an additional change of pedal at the beginning of this bar. Cf. bars 23-26 and 29-31.

According to us, the agogic indications written in A were overlooked in FE (→GE,EE). However, Chopin's proofreading cannot be entirely excluded, much less the acceptance of the lack of these indications. Therefore, in the main text we give them in brackets, leaving their use to the performer's taste.
