Issues : Errors in GE

b. 10-11

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

Ties in A and GE2 (→GE3)

No ties in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

We give the text of A as our main text. The absence of the tied octave f2-f3 in GE1 (→FEEE) is most probably a mistake, which is in a sense confirmed by the reintroduction of the ties in  GE2 (→GE3). However, a puzzling fact is the omission of that place in the proofing of FE, and particularly lack of that correction in FED, in which Chopin added a natural in bar 10 and a fingering numeral in bar 11. This may testify to the acceptance by the composer of the version of striking the entire chord at the beginning of bar 11.

b. 13

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

a1 in A (→GE) and EE3

c2 in FE (→EE1EE2)

..

The version of FE (→EE1EE2), in which the first one of the basic motifs of the Mazurka was distorted, is certainly wrong. The corrections in EE3 were most probably made on the basis of GE1.

A slur in A

Without a slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

There are two deleted bars between bars 19 and 20 in A (see the note above). The slur a1-b1 leads from bar 19 to the deleted version of bar 20, yet it has no ending in the undeleted version. This was why it was omitted in GE (→FEEE). Still, the notation of A, although inaccurate, does not indicate the wish to eliminate the slur.

Sustained e flat1 in A and GE2 (→GE3)

Without the e flat1 crotchet in GE1

Unclear slur in FE

A phrase mark in EE

..

In A, the double-dotted quaver e1 on the 3rd beat of the bar is prolonged to the crotchet value and tied to e1 in the subsequent bar. The omission of the additional crotchet stem for that note in GE1 made it considerably harder to read that fragment properly. The notations of FE and EE further deform Chopin's notation: the tie for e1 is interpreted as a phrase mark linking the demisemiquaver d2 with the struck e1 in bar 37.

A long accent in A

No accent mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

A short accent in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The long accent of A was overlooked in GE1 (→FEEE). It was later added – as an ordinary short accent  – in GE2 (→GE3).
