Pedalling in GE3 (→GE4GE5

In the main text we give the undoubtedly authentic pedalling of FE (→GE1GE2,→EE). In later GE the indications were omitted – presumably by mistake – in bars 9-10.

In the main text we give the tempo indications added by Chopin in subsequent proofs of FE (→GE1GE2, →EE): Allegro already in FEcor, metronome tempo in the next one. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) the metronome marking erroneously displays 114.
Different indications written in Ap may not have a universal value, as the Etude in this autograph differs quite significantly from the published version in terms of pianistics.

No indication in GE

..

Lack of the indication in GE is probably a result of an oversight of the edition's engraver. It is less plausible, although it cannot be excluded, that the indication was omitted and then added in FE.

Fingering in A

..

In the main text we give the fingering of A concerning the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quavers in bar 1 (it was also reproduced in FE and EE) and the fingering numeral over the 9th quaver, added in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). The authenticity of these indications is beyond any doubt, contrary to the limited, yet resulting in the same effect notation of GE and the notation of EE, completed by Fontana. See also the previous note.

The change of Vivace to Lento was introduced by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). The tempo indication of this Etude is the most flagrant example of the change of concept in Chopin's pieces, although a few arguments prove that the actual deceleration of the tempo could have not been that significant as it is suggested by the transition from Vivace to Lento ma non troppo. Cf. bar 21.
