b. 358-360

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Slur ending in FE & EE

GC (→GE)

..

Slur ending in GC (→GE) seems musically more accurate:

  • harmonic flow sets G major chords as the target  (both in b. 351 and in b. 359);
  • accentuated octaves in bars 360, 362, 364 add a new quality by not connecting with the previous phrase.

b. 358

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

Fingering in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

Fingering written into FED

Fingering written into FEH

Fingering in GE3

..

The 1st finger on the 4th semiquaver is almost certainly a mistake of FE (→EE,GE1GE2) – the digit was most probably supposed to concern the next note (d1). The mistake was corrected in FED and FEH; an appropriate change was introduced also in GE3. In the latter and in FEH, in the further part of the passage, a few digits were added, clarifying the fingering indicated by Chopin at the beginning of the bar.

b. 358-359

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt III

..

In FE, the passage was probably reproduced strictly after [A] – it is missing naturals before the 4th, 9th, 11th and 12th semiquavers in bar 358, whereas in bar 359 accidentals are present only before the first two semiquavers. In the remaining editions, naturals were added – GE added all of them, while EE the majority of them (without the 4th and 9th notes in bar 358).

b. 358

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

on 1st beat in A (→FCGE1)

No marking in FE (→EE)

on 2nd beat in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The indication is missing in FE (→EE), see b. 350. Moving  to the second beat of the bar is an arbitrary revision of GE2 (→GE3) (cf. the Etude in C Major, Op. 10 No. 1, b. 1).

b. 358

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

in A (→FC,FEEE) & GE2 (→GE3)

in GE1

An erroneous interpretation of the Chopinesque  as  would frequently happen to the engravers of the first editions, see, e.g. the Sonata in B Minor, Op. 35, I mov., b. 5.  The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3).
