b. 113-115

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

Continuous slur in A (→FE,EE)

Slurs in GC(→GE)

..

In both A and GC bar 114 starts a new line. The slurs in A unequivocally mean a continuous slur, however, the notation in GC is ambiguous – the beginning of slur in bar 114 suggests continuation from the previous bar but the slur in bar 113 ends on the last quaver (this inaccurate notation is meticulously reproduced in GE). We assume this to denote separate slurs. In the main text we give the notation of A (→FE,EE) which does not rise doubts.

b. 113

composition: Op. 26 No 2, Polonaise in E♭ minor

..

EE overlooked the staccato dot in the L.H.

b. 113

composition: Op. 25 No 10, Etude in B minor

..

In GC (→GE1) and EE, there are no accidentals before the crotchets, so they should read as c and c2. In spite of the fact that the version does not raise any doubts as far as the sound is concerned, the omission of the naturals is proved by:

  • the logic of harmony – this and the previous triplet create an abbreviated version of the motif used in the progression in bars 109-112. In this abbreviated version it is then repeated twice in the further part of bars 113-114. There is no reason to resign from the semi-tone movement of crotchets filling the octaves in one place only;
  • misleading chromatic orthography – change from d to c despite preserving regular notation of the octaves in the F minor key;
  • signs added – probably by Chopin – in the proofreading of FE.

b. 113-115

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

 from A in GC

 from B in FE (→EE)

No sign in GE

..

No  hairpin is certainly an oversight of the engraver of GE1, unnoticed in GE2 as well. In the main text we give the range of the sign according to GC, in which it starts from the beginning of the motif.

b. 113

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

In GC and FE (→EE) there is no  before the second grace note. It is almost certainly a mistake of Chopin in [A] – naturals rising c1(2) to c1(2) are missing also in bars 110, 112 and 114.The sign was added in GE.
